Countries, the world over, celebrate March 8 of every year as International Women's Day (IWD). It's even a national holiday in countries such as China, Beirut, etc. Some themes reoccur every year of the celebration even though there is a central theme that is adopted. These include child marriage, slavery, and child trafficking. This year's theme was Inspiring Change.
In Nigeria, with many African and developing countries, child marriage with attendant health problems is a big issue. Young girls begin at a very tender age to bear the burden of sex and motherhood. Some of the unlucky ones whose cervices aren't wide enough, die in child birth. Others may develop health issues such as VVF - vesicovascula fistula.
In India, it's not uncommon to find child prostitutes who live in slums and try everyday to raise money for their families. Some of them are raped and even murdered by their clients. The world isn't particularly safe to raise the girl child.
In China, where femicide or feminicide, is an issue, the female gender is an endangered species that needs to be saved. These are local issues of a global dimension. It's all over the place and we see it everyday. But all hope isn't lost...yet.
What are you doing to help the girl child? Think about and help her.
