Woman In History - Sojourner Truth

I became acquainted with Sojourner Truth, way back in 2008 and girl, was I amazed at this lady's dexterity and courage? Sojourner Truth was named Isabella Baumfree when she was born. Her birth date is believed to be around 1797. She was born into slavery in Swartekill, Ulster, New York, in the United States of America. She escaped from slavery with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826.

Sojourner Truth went to court to recover her son, and became the first black woman to such a case against a white man. She renamed herself Sojourner Truth from Isabella Baumfree in 1843. I remember her most for her speech "Ain't I A Woman?", which was delivered in 1851 in Akron, Ohio.

Sojourner Truth died on November 26, 1883. She is remembered for her strength, courage and endurance before, during and after the women's rights movement and the American civil war. Let's celebrate a woman who has over many centuries continued to inspire women of all colours and creeds. All hail, Sojourner Truth.
