Monday Crucible: More Than A Nigeria Hashtag

You see it everywhere on cyberspace, the newest Nigeria Hashtag, only that it's grave. It speaks of fear with its many gory tales. It's #BringBackOurGirls. It's everywhere and we are getting tired of it. But we needn't relent to discover what this is about. Who is stirring the waters? Who needs another media sensation and publicity? Who's amused?

Last month, Nigerians were initially informed that about 100 schoolgirls were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Borno State. Anybody who is familiar with the Nigerian environment should know that the West Africa School Certificate Examinations (WAEC) were about to begin before the abductions. And how many times was the school raided because the information now shows the number of abducted schoolgirls as over 250?

It's likely that these abductors are local actors who were very familiar with the local terrains and were determined to beat the security personnel in the state. Hence, there is more to this incident than meets the eye. We want all the schoolgirls back. Let this outcry be more than a hashtag. Let this be more than a fad. Many young girls are reported missing and desperate here. Who and where are the parents? Please bring all the missing Chibok schoolgirls back. #NoGirlLeftBehind.
