Season Alert: Carrot...I Hope I Can Get Away With This One

It's a hot Saturday afternoon. Honestly, I wanted to just stay away from this writing thing, but something got me to the cybercafe. I had to check my email, anyway. It's a habit I'm trying to break (:)). If I did yahoo yahoo (419), I would understand my addiction to email.

The season alert for this weekend is CARROT. Have you noticed that it's actually looking cleaner compared to the last few weeks? Let me reiterate that this weekly entry is for local folks and not the Walmart/Shoprite shoppers who get the imported farm produce every now and then. The local carrots were scarce for some time. I only saw them with the women who prepared coleslaw by the road side and the ones I found were really scraggy looking. Yeah, I'm talking about food. Now that carrots are coming into season, they look neater when washed, are juicier and have a lot of flesh.

Carrot
Why eat carrots? It's food. It contains carotene which is believed to cure (I would prefer to say prevent) cancer. I'm not a huge fan of this fruit. I don't like the crunchy noise it makes when it's being eaten but that's my own opinion. Many people like carrot for just that reason - its crunchy noise or sound. To each her own. It's comparable to bitter kola. Many eat it just for the sound it makes inbetween their teeth. Good for them.

There are a few ways to eat carrot. It forms the fruit base of many a smoothie, fruit juice, milkshake and whatever that needs carrot flavouring. It's useful in fruit salads, coleslaw and any other food in great need of a colourful garnishing. I used to eat baby carrots as snack often dipped in sour cream or whatever else cream that was quite yum yum. Carrots are a root crop; hence, its propensity to be dirty. It's like cassava only you don't need to peel the skin but care must be made that it's washed well with clean water. What would you rather do with carrot that has not been mentioned here? Please let us know.
