5 Signs You're About to Make a Bad Career Decision

Oops! I've been wondering what I was supposed to do today but I couldn't recall. Uh! The blog. Yes, I couldn't post an article to my weblog last week Thursday because mother nature kept me off my writing. It's all for a good reason (I can't go wrong with positive thinking, can I?).

I'll keep it short and simple (kiss, kiss). I've been trying to decide what to do next since I don't love what I'm currently doing. I found some interesting crafts to do after graduate school at UMass Boston (should I begin to charge for free advertising?...um?) such as beadwork, hairdressing and the like. I spent a fortune learning Sisterlocks :(.

Sometimes, people choose to change career paths after a few months or even many years of pursuing a passion. The switch should be more interesting, more tasking/challenging, or whatever 'more' they seek. Here are a few signs you are about to make a bad career decision:

  1. You feel a sense of foreboding: Why are you not sure you are making the right decision? Are you asking for more than you can give, going to take more than you can bear/afford/accord? If you feel there will be backlash after the career change, then think again. Anxiety isn't good for our mental health.
  2. You're feeling desperate: Maybe it's just opportunism and not opportunity. While the former is selfish and unfair (thinks of nobody else but oneself), the other enriches everybody involved in the decision and change.
  3. Your motivations aren't healthy: Maybe you just want to teach somebody else a lesson. You want the manager's job because she is too proud for your liking and her own good...hmm? Maybe the new job allows you more time to be alone and waste work time. Make your motivations work for you and everybody else. Of course it's your job not another's, but except it's a one-man business (sole proprietorship) you should think of others too while making your career choice.
  4. You have to talk yourself into it: Hmm...I had to talk myself into doing a Mormon mission for the LDS Church. I wish I hadn't. It'd have done the earth some good. Check again if you need to give yourself a pep talk before you do anything about your job or changing career paths. If your anxiety lasts for a long time (2 months), then you should consider not making the change, after all.
  5. You are restless: Sleepless nights. Mood swings. Bad appetite. These are some of the signs that the thought of changing your job is not a good one for you.
#These points aren't original to me. So, make sure you don't quote me as the original creator, but blog post is mine. Oh! I find that these points can be applied to decisions bordering on general life interests: marriage (getting a divorce, separating, getting married),  travelling abroad, moving homes, starting graduate school, doing a (major) surgery, pick your choice. I hope that this post helps somebody today.

And tell, should I make these posts a podcast instead? Chao!
