6 Vices that Negate Niger Delta Pariotism

I know what you are thinking: what do I know of the Niger Delta? No, I don't know much of the area but I know that it has had its own fair share of the Nigeria problem. What this means to me is that Nigerian regions have peculiar problems hindering their progress and development. No part of the country is free of trouble and free from blame. The country belongs to the people and not the other way round. I have heard it said and I borrow this saying from John F. Kennedy: 'Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.' It's in line with this quote from a former American president that I share six (6) vices that negate Niger Delta patriotism in Nigeria. These include....

  1. Acrimony: This means bitterness or ill feeling. There are many tribes in the Niger Delta, which has led to continuous hatred and hostility in the area. Nine states comprise the Niger Delta of region and are home to such tribes as the Ijaw, Urhobo, Efik, Ibibio, Itsekiri, Igbo, Ikwerre, Opobo, etc. In the past, militants from the area were notorious for being pirates and holding oil company staff hostage. The native are also victim of all sorts of structural violence and conspiracies, which have further divided them. Conflicts over settlement especially over oil spillage has made the situation worse. Carnage and other forms of destruction have been associated with the area in the past.
  2. Dupery: This is the act of duping or using deception to rip somebody else off. The dupery of this area is worse if you live in the area but it has also led to suspicion and acrimony within the citizenry. There's no need for paranoia. Just verify your facts whenever you are working with the boys of this area and ensure you won't fall victim to Yahoo Plus, identity theft, tax evasion and other forms of corruption. The ladies are often used as baits and as many of them are sluts and harlots like in other parts of the country.
  3. Cantankerousness: This means disagreeable to deal with. Due to the problems found in this region, suspicion and rancour have led to cantankerousness. Civil and criminal disputes are often the order of the day here as with other parts of Nigeria. I believe that a major cause of this vice is voodoo, heathenism, or heathenry. Many people of this region are pagan or have chosen to combine paganism with either Christianity or another form of religion and are often contentious. Hostility cannot engender patriotism as the population don't believe that the government works for them.
  4. Vandalism: Rebelling against the nation and government has to vandalism of oil pipelines and government counter attacks have often led to carnage in the area. Bunkering is a major term used to describe the destruction of oil pipelines for selfish interests.
  5. Robbery: This is stealing, especially by force or through threat of violence. Armed robbery and other forms of insecurity are believed to be cause for concern in this region. No country would develop where there's incessant insecurity. This vice is also peculiar to other parts of the Nigerian nation.
  6. Sluttery: This is the quality or practice of a promiscuous person. I choose sluttery over harlotry, which is the usual practice or trade of a harlot because not all sexual promiscuity is rewarded in cash or kind. Sluttery is a problem in a place where the citizens are beleaguered by poverty and HIV/AIDS. It's not saying that's the only part of the world where there's promiscuity, it's just a problem. Trafficking in persons are carried out across the states and areas of the Niger Delta for sluttery and harlotry. It has negated the health, welfare and even the wealth of some citizens of this region. There's a reason why the oldest tradition has tarried - this is because many have found it rewarding and pleasant to people who practice harlotry especially as patronage in government and civil service. In a democracy, sluttery allows for big girls to ride big cars and live in mansions. In a military regime, they cruise with the big khaki boys. Anyway.... The Niger Delta is wealthy thanks to the patronage of the oil servicing companies together with the associated sluttery of the region especially among the women folk. When money is not the reason for the sluttery, power and privilege take the front burner of why it is practised. Have you heard of bottom power? It's a dividend of sluttery and often leads to abuse of power, privilege and rights.
