Got $10 (to spare)? Here are 10 Side Business Ideas to try in Nigeria from WEDA

Hello, readers and well wishers, here are updates from the Women's Enterprise Development Academy (WEDA). I have compiled 10 everyday things anybody could start with expendable income. This means that it's all there if you've got a lot of money to invest into it. But if you've got just $10 or N5, 000 to spare and you are in Nigeria (or any other place for that matter) you could find them interesting ventures to begin. These aren't your main job as that would leave you relying heavily on the outcome. It's possible to grow them as the days go by. Chances are you had thought about them before but let's have them:

  1. Tigernut or soya bean drink: Every body drinks milk but if people knew their allergies you could make a good chunk of money selling lactose free milk to some folks. Tiger nut is nutty as the name implies, while soya bean is a legume. Tiger nut drink is usually prepared by blending together coconut, dates and the tiger nuts. A cheesecloth or muslin cloth comes in handy to strain the liquid obtained into fine milk. Of course you need to refrigerate to make it more appetizing to your customers. Right?
  2. Akara:
The famous bean cake that everybody would love for breakfast. I've been eating akara since childhood and had only quit when I realized that it could be contaminated if not prepared in sanitary places. But for the most part, many people would have it as a mean course or a quick meal. Packed in a topper ware and sent off to office buildings these in combo with kunu is a nice breakfast. A paint of black eyed beans is a little above N2000 in Nigeria. Add the vegetable oil, a kg of gas, a little pepper and onion, salt and you are in side business heaven. Somebody say, "Hello!"
  3. Akamu/Pap: This is pap made from fermented corn or millet. Choose your preference to be a little different from Mama Mgbeke. But we all take akamu especially now that it's a little chilly. The rainy season is a good time to make and take pap. Try other ways to process it for the export market.
  4. Pyjama/Pajama pants: Can you sew? Do you know anybody who owns a sewing machine and is happy to have you borrow it for a few days or a week? Maybe your mum, aunt or sister? Pajama pants are easy straight sewing and could fetch some money and even a label in a few years. So, maybe try that especially now that it's chilly. Guys who wear boxer shorts to sleep are likely to wear pajama pants to bed too. And the cool part? Those come in unisex and dynamic sizes and colours.
  5. Jewellery (Beading): Many fine beads interesting things to wear often. Africans (and others?) love colourful accessories. A beading tool kit could cost a little above N2000. Get creative and find some money coming in to you every now and then after a sale.
  6. Barbing: Barbers provide beauty to mostly men. However, women can learn this skill and cash in on mobile services provided with a battery operated clipper. Makes sense? Of course, it's alright to learn the art from a man but nothing stops a woman or a young man from making a living on the side from this skill and business idea. There's opportunity for growth in this grooming business.
  7. Roadside food vendor
  8. Shoe shiner
  9. Nail aesthetic
  10. Nanny services

Are you a woman and would like to grow an existing business or learn how to manage a business? The Women's Enterprise Development Academy (WEDA) is opening its doors to business very soon. Located tentatively at the Post Office Umungasi, Abia State, it promises to demystify skill development and bring success your way.
